The amazing thing is that he wrote this for one of his post-graduate degrees and had us record with him the first time – I was probably about 10 at the time – and it just keeps going!

My name is Victoria & I recently gave birth to my first child. This morning I was rocking my son & singing him some songs to try to soothe him to sleep & your father’s song “I am special” came to mind. When I was little Dr. Roden would come to my school (Northwood Elementary) & sing his songs to us. I used to LOVE when he would come visit the school. I remembered the chorus to “I am special” but could not remember the words to the different verses. In a feeble attempt I put in “lyrics to I am special there is no one quite like me” in the yahoo search engine & came across your blog post last year about your dad. I was wondering & hoping that you might be able & willing to e-mail me the lyrics to the rest of the song, & perhaps some of his other songs too, so I could sing it to my son. I have such fond memories of your dad sharing his music with me & my classmates & just love the message that his “I am special” song portrays. Thank for your time & effort.

Exactly! Darrell Whiteman's response dealt closely with this, looking at it from an academic viewpoint and looking at some biblical examples from Acts as well. One of his comments is "perhaps a more fruitful approach would be to look at the underlying meanings that are expressed through contextualized forms. We will find much more common agreement if we focus on the Christian meanings being expressed in different forms.

Well said. This is another way of looking at form versus function. While the forms may change with time and/or culture, the function never does. Jesus did the same within the context of his own ministry. He used differing approaches to interact with different people. For example, no two people were ever healed the same way. His methods changed, but his message never did. That is the challenge all Christians face: to present the gospel in all its truth without compromise (function) in a relevant, meaningful way that connects with people where they are (form).
